Are you ready to get merry?

The Holidays are here!

Styling points for dressing for the season

Holiday parties HERE – are they listed on your calendar?  Are you preparing NOW?  Because your size is being sold out as we speak.  Here's the plan.

  • Find the dress, buy the dress.
  • Get it altered to fit YOU, especially the hem length. Take to the tailors NOW to save rush charges and frantic run to tailor shop in rush hour traffic. Most want a week’s turnaround time.
  • If you’re renting from one of the services, order a dress or two NOW and hold on to them. If they don’t fit, you still have time to send back and try again, just be certain you have one.
  • Make sure you have the right undergarments to make you and the dress look perfect. (bra, Spanx, panty hose, whatever)
  • Got shoes? Can you walk in them do the door? (I valeted recently because my shoes were so tall, but I LOOKED good!) Can you dance in them? If it’s a long dress, is the hem short enough to prevent tripping or ripping the hem out?
  • Clutch or cocktail bag, please. Not the giant IT bag with a party dress.
  • Plan for a mani/pedi early in season, so you look polished, especially a pedi if you’re going to wear flashy sandals. Schedule it NOW.
  • Schedule a fresh haircut/style/color NOW -- December is crazy.
  • Do you need to schedule a make-up artist? Buy new make-up?  Do it NOW. Have you got a back-up make-up kit in your desk drawer?
  • Do you have a stylish party wrap/coat? A trench coat over a cocktail dress is not a good way to make an entrance.

If you literally have to go from office to party here’s the fastest way to up level your look.

First remember, what we are looking for is a CONTRAST in what you’re wearing from office to the party to signal you’re ready to be festive!

  • Find a solid, bold seasonal color to wear to work.  Be certain it’s comfortable
  • Red is always good. Green, blue, black as last resort
  • Perhaps you wear a jacket over it you can take off later
  • Now, add sparkle:
  • Jewelry
  • Add sparkly/bigger earrings
  • Add interesting necklace
  • Add more sparkle with bracelets or a ring
  • Add metallic or sparkly clutch bag

Change shoes:

Switch from your office pumps to sparkly sandals or fun flats like an animal print.  (You’re fun, remember!)

Make-up refresh

  • Blot excess oil from face (those tissue toilet seat covers are great for absorbing oil!) and then powder down
  • Add more blush on the apple of your cheek to put the color back in your face
  • Add red lip color and gloss for drama, not a nude or a frost
  • Darken contour of eye (camera flash will wash most of it out anyway)
  • Go crazy and add a little sparkly eyeshadow (optional)
  • Add extra mascara and eyeliner to pop your eye

If you have a hairstyle that can be changed dramatically, switch it up for contrast.  A beautiful hair clip would be great.

If you have a fun shawl, cardigan, kimono that really looks like it works over your office clothes, add it.

And PLEASE, PLEASE remember, someone is ALWAYS shooting photos or video.  Make sure what you’re wearing is something you’d like to see on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow.  I heard a story about a lawyer losing a job offer because of his WIFE’S social media. We gotta be careful!

Oh, and have FUN at the party!
