How effective is your finance organization in supporting the business? Are they providing you what you need to make good business decisions?
IMO, our finance group was at one time a highly effective business partner. However, over the years their influence has become too deep, and I believe they now hinder more than help. Example: to keep costs low, we have a relentless focus on keeping inventory low; one way (among many) we do that is by keeping very few spare parts on hand. Unfortunately, this means our customers suffer with slower turnaround on parts/ repairs, because we want to keep costs low. I believe we can do better --> keep the top 10% most-requested parts on hand for quick turnaround, but keep the low-cost focus on the rest.
I think there is a danger with shared functions like Finance that it becomes the "tail wagging the dog" ... but I do also believe such functions can contribute strongly around the leadership table, if given the right opportunities to do so.
Are you talking about Jun Ma ?
Hey I marked finance what's that. Because I don't have much of a finance team anymore. But when I did - they were great at both BP and She'll. Kept me on my toes
